How to Choose the Perfect Autism Toys!
Many people are unsure of what gift or toy to buy for children with Autism. Most prefer to buy something that will provide both enjoyment and an educational experience for the child. Be creative and think outside of the box compared to the gifts that you might buy for a neuro-typical child. When selecting a game or toy, target the child's interests instead of what may be age appropriate or the current fad. If you are unsure of the child's interests, ask the parents, teacher or therapist. Some areas to consider include:
1) Does the child have any strong interests?
Selecting Autism toys that naturally fall within the child’s interests increases the likelihood that the child will enjoy and participate in the activity. For instance, if the child is interested in animals, the Gallop-N-Go stick pony would be an appropriate selection to help them work on gross motor skills.
2) Are there specific types of toys or items that the child likes to carry around with them?
3) Before buying toys for chidren with Autism, consider their sensory needs.
If the child enjoys tactile stimulation, such as touching, rubbing, and feeling different textures, you could consider getting them a large, fluffy, animal-shaped pillow or a game that involves feeling textured items and sensory integration. If the child enjoys watching items as they fall and often knocks things over, consider a game that involves throwing objects, such as “Smart Toss” or “Happy Giddy Bowling”.
4) What movie or characters does the child like?
Incorporating these characters helps to make the learning process fun and motivate the child to engage in the play and learning experience.
5) Are there any specific items or categories that the child's therapist or teacher recommends?
At Shining Abilities, we have designed our website around the main developmental categories for children on teh Autism spectrum. This makes it easier for you to select the toys and games that are appropriate for the skills of each child. These include language, cognitive, social/emotional, fine motor, sensory, play, self-help and gross motor skill categories.
Lastly, within a category, think about the skills that the child is currently working to learn. Are they working on speech-language therapy and expanding their vocabulary? If so, “Visual Books” or “Language Builder Cards” may be good options to consider. Alternatively, if the child is working on developing their social skills, “My Community” or “Emotion Cards” would be good products to consider.
In addition to finding the perfect toy, don't forget to wear your Autism jewlery showing support for those you love! We have a full selection of Autism Jewelry including Autism bracelets, earrings, pins, neclaces and more ensuring you'll find he perfect piece for you!
